Students and their schools

Passion for Learning works with 6th-7th and 8th grade boys and girls to help them advance their tech skills and interests as well as plans for success in high school and college. Our partner middle schools are:

  • Eastern
  • Silver Spring International
  • Sligo
  • Colonel E. Brooke Lee
  • Parkland
  • Argyle
  • A. Mario Loiederman
  • Francis Scott Key

Instructors

At each of our partner schools, we link students to talented and caring MCPS teachers, who encourage our youth and help them strive and achieve. Many of our teachers have been with our programs for several years. Examples include Ned MacFadden at Eastern Middle School, who’s been one of our “adolescent whisperers” for 7 years. And, Jo Doerrman at Argyle Middle school, who has been teaching computer technology for us since 2006. And…Pamela Altman, Technology specialist at Loiederman Middle School whose GRRL Tech girls are regular Youth Media Festival finalists and winners.

Inspiring Adults

Each year we engage adult professionals who visit after school programs or host field trips for our students. They inspire our youth and stimulate their interests in future tech courses and professions. Field trips include Dig-It! Games video game design studio, Catylator Makerspace, college campuses and the annual Montgomery County Youth Media Festival. Program guests have included video game designers, photographers, videographers and women professionals in tech companies.

Classroom Assistants

Passion for Learning engages its alums who come back to work for us. Over the past year, 12 high school and college students coached and mentored their younger peers at after school and summer programs. Our thanks go out to: Alyssa B, Alyssa P, Jake J, Ebonie G, Marian C, Jenny G, Emely G, Zenab A, Isabella L, Rediet B, Melvyn H and Ashley A,
