Afterschool and Summer Digital Literacy and STEM-related programs

Goals and outcomes: Students were surveyed at the end of the school year and at the end of the summer Tech Squad camp. 

90+ students engaged in afterschool digital literacy (Dig.Lit) and afterschool-summer technology (Tech Squad) programs.

Out of 90 electronic post-surveys sent to participating students, 66 were completed for a return rate of 72%.

  • Self-perception

    • Outcome 1: All 66 students (100%) expressed that they saw themselves as capable and belonging in STEM-related pursuits. 
    • Outcome 2: 66 of 66 (100%) stated that they learned to do things they didn’t think they could do before.

  • STEM interest & capabilities

    Outcome:

    • 65 of 66 (99%) expressed interest in taking STEM-related courses in high school. 
    • Students chose from a list of MCPS high school electives. Top 6 vote-getters: 1) Digital art; 2) Video and film production; 3) 3D printing and design; 4) Computer animation; 5) Graphic and digital design; 6) Computer coding and programming.

  • Higher education goal setting

    Outcome:

    42 of 66 (64%) stated that they plan to earn at least a college bachelor’s degree.

38 students participated in the afterschool and summer Go2College program.

Out of 38 electronic post-surveys sent to students, 33 were completed for a return rate of 85%

30 of 33 (90%) stated that getting good grades would help them achieve their future goals.

25 of 33 (76%) expressed that college is important for them to achieve their future goals.

At least 75% of students will express the expectation of earning at least a bachelor’s degree.

23 of 33 (70%) expressed the expectation of earning at least a bachelor’s degree.

At least 75% of students will gain knowledge about financial aid to help them pay for college.
